Benefits of Orthodontics

Straight teeth are easier to clean, function better and more likely to last a lifetime. Dr. Ormond and his staff
are devoted
to building beautiful smiles by improving the alignment of the teeth, lips and jaws. We can improve most tooth and jaw alignment problems at any age. For most people, a beautiful smile is the most obvious benefit of orthodontics. Most patients feel more self-confident as a result of their new smile.

Types of Braces

Orthodontic appliances include standard metal brackets and aesthetic braces.

The most common Aesthetic brace is a tooth coloured bracket attached to the front of the tooth. This can be used to carry out short treatments of 4-8 month duration, ie a pretty smile in 6 months! Not everyone can achieve these results in this time frame, however we would let you know at the initial consult.  Another option is removable clear aligners such as Invisalign Appliance.

With Invisilign, a series of 15 to 40 aligners are each worn for two weeks. Each aligner gently move the teeth over the two week period before progressing onto  the next aligner. Not all cases can be treated with the Invisalign appliance.

In growing patients, a functional appliance can be used to correct jaw alignment where one or both jaws are either prominent or retruded.

By placing a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction, braces slowly move teeth to the corrected position.

In-so-far as possible, we get our patients to choose their brace of preference. Children can choose the colour of the ties that hold the wires in the brackets. Different colours can be chosen at every visit.

Duration of Treatment

The length of treatment varies between four months and 2 years, although complex cases may take longer.  Young patients grow at different rates and will respond differently to orthodontic treatments. The patient’s diligent use of any prescribed aids such as rubber bands will considerably reduce treatment time. Interceptive, or early orthodontic treatment may take as little as six months.
